SYMPTOMS
========

Loading a GIF file that does not specifically contain an Image Object into
Visual Basic (via the PictureBox control for example), generates the run-
time error 50003:

   "Unexpected Error"

RESOLUTION
==========

There are two main workarounds currently available:

 - Trap for and handle appropriately error 50003 (Unexpected error) in your
   Visual Basic application.

   -or-

 - Ensure that images contained within a GIF file are included specifically
   as Image Objects and not contained within Application Blocks.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this
bug and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Visual Basic 5.0 does not currently support GIFs that include images which
are contained within Application Blocks. The Image Object must be included
in the GIF as a separate Image Object. This functionality does currently
exist in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0.
